Course Syllabus
- TITLE OF COURSE: BA2401 - Business Career Exploration
- COURSE DESCRIPTION: One hour/Independent Study (Job Shadowing). Permission from instructor is
required before enrollment. This course is designed to give the student
on-the-job experience in an instructor selected training station under the
supervision of an employer and the coordinating instructor. The employer will
file an evaluation report and keep a record of the time spent on the
observation. The student must observe a total of 12.5 hours to receive the one
hour of credit. The student may have only one class of observation to count
toward graduation. For each unit of
credit, a minimum of three hours per week with one of the hours for class and
two hours for studying/preparation outside of class is expected.
- TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS: No textbook is required for this course.
- SCCC/ATS OUTCOMES: Students who successfully complete this course will demonstrate the ability to do the following SCCC/ATS Instructional Outcomes.
- Outcome #1: Read with comprehension, be critical of what is read, and apply knowledge gained from reading to broader issues of the day.
- Outcome #2: Communicate their ideas clearly and proficiently in writing and speaking, appropriately adjusting content and arrangement for varying audiences, purposes, and situations.
- Outcome #9: Exhibit workplace skills to include respect for others, teamwork competence, attendance/punctuality, decision making, conflict resolution, truthfulness/honest, positive attitude, judgment, responsibility.
- COURSE OUTCOMES: The student should be able to gain first hand knowledge about career fields they
are interested in pursuing
- COURSE COMPETENCIES: After the student has completed this observation, he should be able to receive a satisfactory rating on the following.
- Reliability:
- Arrive at business on time.
- Calls if unable to report for observation.
- Attitude:
- Shows respect for employer.
- Shows respect for other employees of the company.
- Shows genuine interest in learning about the career.
- Personal Characteristics:
- Dresses neatly and appropriately for the job.
- Is well groomed.
- Is courteous.
- Uses correct grammar.
- COURSE OUTLINE: Each student is dealt with in a customized manner. The following represents a series of steps common to all students.
- After the student is enrolled there is an agreement/contract developed for the observation.
- The student will keep a journal of the observation. The journal will be turned in to the instructor at the end of the observation time.

- METHODS OF ASSESSMENT:
- Methods of assessing the SCCC/ATS instructional outcomes, general outcome and the specific course competencies include the following:
- Employer rating on the course competencies.
- Evaluation of journal kept by the student.
- The student will comply with all employee work regulations of the employer. Unethical or illegal actions taken by the student on the job will result in dismissal from the course.
